‘KANK’ creates a family tale
Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna - (KANK) (Never Say Goodbye),
another one of the big budgeted Bollywood movies made by Karan Johar
who is famous for his previous direction , Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham
and Kal Ho Naa Ho.

Coinciding with the world premiere the film was
released here at Liberty cinema Colombo, Sigiri Katugastota and
four other theatres around the country.
Staring Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Rani
Mukerji, Preity Zinta, Abhishek Bachchan and Kiron Kher in pivotal
roles, KANK centers on the budding romance between Dev and Maya,
who are both married to different people. Settled into a life of
domestic ritual, and convinced that they are happy in their respective
relationships, the protagonists still yearn for something deeper
and more meaningful, which is precisely what they find in each other.
From a relationship starting off in pleasant barbs,
the two begin to develop and acknowledge the feelings they have
beneath the surface. When their feelings come to the surface, what
results is a collision of lives and emotions, affecting everyone
involved and changing them forever.

Speaking about the film the director says "Human
relationships have always perplexed me. These seemingly simple bonds
between people can amount to so much and cause such upheaval that
lives change drastically with a minute change in these equations.
Especially in a fast changing world of today, such changes seem
magnified hundred fold forcing us to question our age old definitions
of relationships and commitment".
‘The seed for Kabhi Alvida Naa
Kehna (KANK)’ was born somewhere out of these
thoughts. The alarming statistics of failing marriages in recent
times, often made me wonder about the relevance of the institutions
to our society today. With men and women handling far more responsibilities
than what was conventionally assigned to them centuries ago, it
is natural for them to expect more from life for themselves. So
in this complex scenario how much does one compromise on self-gratification
for the sake of commitment? Or should one compromise at all?"

A scene from the movie |
There are three kinds of married people in the
world. First, those whose marriages are arranged. I've never quite
understood that, but I'm sure they know what they are doing.
Then there are those who fall in love and marry
their soul mates. These few, I believe, are the most fortunate people
in the world.
And lastly, there are those couples that marry
for their parents, for money or play it safe and marry a friend.
These are the most unfortunate ones in the world…and they
don't even know it. Until one day, riding the fast train of life
they run into their soul mate, and are faced with the hardest question
of all.
‘What do you do when you meet the love of
your life and you are married to someone else? What do you do? What
do you do?’, quarries Karan Johar.
KANA was filmed over a 90 day shooting period
in the USA and a few scenes were shot on 4 large sets in Mumbai's
studios. The film's score and soundtrack has been composed by the
musical trio, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy with lyrics penned by Javed Akhtar.
The film was reportedly made for an astronomical Rs 70 crore.
The film was imported and distributed by Janitha Marasinghe for
Janitha Films.
