JKH Warehouse awarded ISO 22000:2005 certification
John Keells Warehousing, Asia’s largest tea
warehouse, has been awarded ISO 22000: 2005 Food Safety Management
System certification, becoming the first tea warehouse in Sri Lanka
to obtain the important certification, the company said.
“Many of the countries worldwide that consume
Ceylon Tea require imports to comply with international food factory
hygiene standards throughout the supply chain. John Keells Warehousing
thus upgraded its warehouse to meet global tea warehousing standards,
thereby benefiting its clients and the end-consumer,” the
statement added.
The ISO 22000:2005 certification is granted to
companies that demonstrate their ability to control food safety
hazards in order to ensure that the food is safe at the time of
human consumption. It specifies the requirements for operating and
maintaining a food safety management system within the warehouse
and for compliance with applicable statutory and regulatory food
safety requirements.
John Keells Warehouse is a state of the art tea
warehouse with the capacity of storing 5 million kg of tea at any
given time. The teas are palletized and stored off the ground on
racks. Battery driven electronically controlled Reach Trucks are
used for stacking and de-stacking the pallets on racks.
The John Keells Warehouse is currently used by
over 150 tea estates to store teas pending at the Colombo Tea Auction.
Located in Muthurajawela, the warehouse began operations in April
2003 with a fully computerized stock management system and a highly-trained
multi-skilled crew, which have contributed to very competitive levels
of efficiency.
