My best holiday

Winner - under 9 years

We got our summer holidays on July 7, 2006. We were planning to go on a trip for our holidays. We thought of going to Galle, the place where my aunt lives.

We started our long journey early in the morning. The time was about five o'clock.

On the way we saw some turkeys in the middle of the road. Some cows were playing with their calves in a meadow.

Then we reached Galle. It was four o'clock when we reached Galle. We played and flew kites all over the ramparts. We played in the sea too. We found seashells. I had a grand time in Galle.

Something I am good at

Winner - 9-12 years

Something I am good at? Well, my answer is "writing".

I don't mean good handwriting, but as in writing stories, poems, facts etc. My favourite subject is English; that's when I enjoy myself most at school, unlike Science when I just fall asleep while the teacher keeps droning on.

Oh, boy! English sure is cool; there are essays to write, poems to compose, short stories, brochures, posters and booklets. I'm in heaven!

I'm only happy when I'm curled up in my bed, writing stories. I've already got one of my books published.

All my friends are English freaks too, but not much. I'm goofy over English.

Fridays are my favourite because we get a reading period, and our teacher gives us a 'Reading Journal'. We write out a review. So, let's hit it for 'writing'; the coolest pastime ever!

An act of kindness

Winner - 12-14 years

I was trying to cross the extremely busy streets of Colombo, when I saw a very old and weary lady trying to cross the pedestrian line.

It was the 'rush-hour' and unless I fought my way across the road soon, could I be on time for school. So, I pushed the thought of helping the old woman out of my mind.

A student (who looked no older than eight), happened to see the old lady, who after many unsuccessful attempts, stood back. This student frantically fought her way through the mass of people and vehicles, held the old lady by her hand and helped her cross the road. After praising and bidding the young girl a successful and pleasant future ahead, the lady climbed into the bus.

I was overwhelmed with shame for not helping a fellow citizen of my country. From that day onwards, I tried my very best to help anybody in any possible way and set a better example on the citizens of Sri Lanka.

A trip to Bentota Beach Hotel

On July 23, 2006, I woke up early in the morning and brushed my teeth, drank milk, washed, got dressed and began packing my clothes. My father finally ironed a red star dress, and I put it in my bag. Then I packed all my beach toys. Then I got into the car. My father and mother got in and we got ready to go.

On the way we passed Ratmalana and Panadura. When we passed Panadura, my mother showed me my great-grand father's house. Then we went by Moratuwa. Lots of people were coming to church. When we reached Kalutara I saw a temple. Mother put some money there.

Finally we reached Bentota. I saw houses broken by the tsunami and we saw people still affected by the wave.

When we got to the Bentota Beach Hotel, my father asked the police where to park, then we stopped at the place he told. I was very exited because it was the first time I'd been to the hotel and as I went up, I got more delighted because my Nandas, Amali Nanda and Manishka Nanda, Chooty Bappa, Varuna Bappa, my favourite nangi, Thenuri and Eric Seeya were coming too. When we came up, we fist went to the reception, then we found Amali Nanda's, Varuna Bappa's and Thenuri's room. Thenuri and I played together. Later Thenuri went swimming and Chooty Bappa and Manishka Nanda came to see me playing at the playground. After that, Thenuri ate from the restaurant and I ate at the room. For dessert, Thenuri and I had apples.

We rested a while, in the evening we went to the Bentota Beach. Thenuri dug a nice fish tank and father helped me dig a canal, which I put my toy fishes, so that when the waves come, they would float. I had a lovely time at the beach.

Poem Of The Week

Grandma and me

I have a grandmother
She is my mother's mother
She is very wise
And she is very nice

She loved me a lot,
Makes my milk hot,
When I want a nap
She keeps me in her lap

When I am sick in bed,
She lovingly touches my head
Tells stories of ancient times
And sings lovely nursery rhymes
