600 litres in secret tanks of rogue bowsers

Five bowsers and their owners have been blacklisted after separate compartments which were used to secretly store fuel meant for distribution, were found in those bowsers.

Ceylon Petroleum Storage Terminal Ltd. (CPSTL) chairman Ashantha De Mel told the Sunday Times that five bowsers containing secret compartments in the storage section were discovered during a spot check last week.

“I was informed that some of the secret compartments found in the bowsers could carry up to 600 litres at a time which is about 60,000 rupees worth of fuel,” he said.

“We knew there was something wrong when the quantity of fuel pumped into the storage tanks at the sheds was considerably less than the amount loaded into those bowsers,” he said.

Mr. De Mel said that vigilance would be increased in the facility to prevent such activities in future. “We will blacklist the bowsers and their owners and we mean to fine all the bowser owners involved for damages and losses,” he added.

Lanka Petroleum Public Service Union representative Siripala Gamage said that local authorities were behind these acts.

“Because of privatisation there is a lot of corruption and these bowsers are private ones owned by those with connections to politicians,” he said.

The losses incurred due cannot be estimated as investigations are still in progress and no one is still certain as to how long these activities have been taking place.
