CEB reforms Bill coming to Cabinet again
By Shelani Perera
The electricity reforms Bill is to be presented
to Cabinet once again with amendments to the clauses which were
cited as unconstitutional by the Supreme Court, when the Bill was
referred to it by the President.
The Supreme Court which determined that several
clauses were unconstitutional said a special majority would be needed
to get the Bill passed in Parliament. Power and Energy Minister
John Seneviratne told The Sunday Times that the Government would
make all efforts to reform the Ceylon Electricity Board which was
running at a loss.
“We have to abide by the Court ruling but
we will present the Bill to Parliament with a few changes. We can
always look for an alternative to the formation of the six Companies
which the Supreme Court has ruled would violate the Constitution.
However, there has to be some kind of changes in the CEB, if the
Board is to survive” Minister Seneviratne said.
He said he is scheduled to meet President Mahinda
Rajapaksa to discuss the matter. |
