Blessing
for the sick
The annual blessing of the sick at the Shrine
of Our lady of Lanka, Tewatta this year will be on August 27 with
the theme ‘Win Peace Through Forgiveness.’
The usual healing and prayer service associated
with the annual service will be preceded by a Tridium of Prayer
commencing on the 23rd at 6.30 p.m. and continued on Thursday and
Friday at the same time.
On August 26, also at 6.30 p.m. there will be
the usual candle light procession from the Old Grotto to the Basilica.
This will be followed by Vespers, presided over by the Archbishop
Emeritus Dr. Nicholas Marcus Fernando.
On the 27th, there will be masses from 5 a.m.
till 11 a.m. There will be a Mass in English at 9 a.m., in Tamil
at 10 a.m. and in the evening at 5 p.m for late arrivals.
The Healing and Prayer service at 2 p.m. will
be presided over by Dr. Oswald Gomis, the Archbishop of Colombo,
Archbishop Emeritus, Dr. Thomas Saundranayagam, Bishop of Jaffna
and Dr. Marius Peiris, Auxilliary Bishop.
Book on renowned personalities
‘Being Close To Them – Among Some
Eminent Personalities,’ a book by former High Court Judge
W. T. A. Leslie Fernando, will be released at the National Library
and Documentation Services Board Auditorium, Independence Avenue,
Colombo at 3.30 p.m. on August 21.
The book is an account of the life and times of
17 distinguished personalities, including Bishop Edmund Peiris,
Fr. Marcelline Jayakody, Fr. W. L. A. Don Peter, Ven. Siyambalagouwe
Sri Gunarathana Anunayake Theor, Philip Gunawardene, Dr. C. W. W.
Kannangara and Dr. Hector Fernando. Anura Bandaranaike – Minister
of Tourism will deliver the keynote address. The book is published
by Godage Publishers (Pvt) Ltd.
Bollywood make-up artiste
in Sri Lanka
The Sri Lanka Association of Hairdressers and
Beauticians presents Indian Bollywood make-up artiste, Asha Hariharan,
who will conduct four workshops/seminars in August/September 2006
at the following venues:

August 30 – Sampath Hall – Kandy,
September 1 – National Youth Centre – Maharagama
September 2 – Chamber of Commerce – Galle

Ahasin Watunu Minissu
Veteran dramatist R. R. Samarakoon’s latest
production Ahasin Watunu Minissu, which won four awards at the Drama
Festival in 1971 will go on the boards at Negombo’s Rukmani
Devi Theatre today, at 3.30 and 7.00 p.m.
The cast includes Thilak Kumara Ratnayake, Ramya
Wanigasekera, Geetha Kanthy Jayakody, Wickrama Senevirathna and
Ravindra Ariyarathne.
Commemorating Dr. Kovoor
After 27 years, the Ceylon Rationalist Association
will hold a public meeting to commemorate Dr. Abraham Kovoor, the
founder of the Association, on August 23, at 3.00 p.m. at the auditorium
of the Public Library, Colombo.
All those with a rationalist frame of mind are invited to be present.
