Invitees at the opening ceremony |
An impressive opening ceremony marked the launch
of the re-branded hotel by the John Keells Group (JKH) on August
10. Soon after they arrived on sea planes from the capital Male,
the distinguished invitees including the Maldivian Deputy Minister
of Tourism – Abdul Hameed Zakariyya, Deputy Chairman (JKH)
– Ajith Gunewardene and CEO of Chaaya Hotels – Jayatissa
Kehelpannala were taken to the island resort on decorated dhonis
(traditional Maldivian boats).
Touching land, they, along with other hotel guests,
were treated to ‘Langiri Gehun’ a traditional boat welcome
dance on water characterised by rhythmic movements of men and women
swaying side to side, clapping and singing to the beat of drums
made from the skin of sting rays.
Along the pier, little huts depicted the livelihoods
of the Maldivian people. Making of rice winnows, grinding of spices,
repairing nets, soldering fishing hooks, boat building and show
cooking, vital aspects of the kingdom’s culture were showcased
in keeping with Chaaya’s brand promise of reflecting their
surroundings.
A brief flag hoisting ceremony followed, after
which the logo of Chaaya, the foot, was unveiled. Speaking on the
occasion, JKH’s Deputy Chairman – Ajit Gunewardene reiterated
their long-term commitment to the Maldivian hospitality industry.
Complimenting JKH for keeping abreast with changing
expectations and trends in tourism, as well as their pioneering
step in setting up a training centre, Maldivian Deputy Minister
stressed the importance of protecting the environment. A champagne
breakfast and a gala barbeque dinner on the beach for all guests
completed the celebratory launch.
