Trinity demolish Vidyartha
Trinity – 34 Vidyartha – 3
By Aubrey Kuruppu
The Trinity Lions turned on a dazzling display
of XV-a-side rugby to dash the hopes of the Vidyartha Tigers in
a 34 points (2 goals, 4 tries) to 3 (1 penalty) demolition at Nittawela
yesterday.
The winners were most impressive as they handled
the ball very well among the outsides and the forwards worked very
hard to get the team into attacking positions.
Lock Sean Wanigasekera, though not scoring any
tries himself, was just amazing as he seemed to be omnipresent and
dished out some crash-bang. Prop Satya Ranatunga also gained ground
by using his sturdy frame to good advantage.
Vidyartha depended on the efforts of a few players
and they received a major set back when number eight Buddika Abeysinghe
was injured and left the field early in the game.
Skipper Imalka Madduapatabendi brooked no stopping
when he powered his way through twice in the space of eight minutes
from close range. Full back Krishan Kirinde goaled both of them,
(19-3)
The best try came shortly before lemons when Senarath
received a well-timed pass from the second centre and did a spectacular
run along the touch line before cutting in and scoring. It was 24-3
at the break.
Trinity seemed to go off the boil early in the
second half and the Vidyartha lads had a few attacking moments to
savour. During this time Chandimal missed converting a simple penalty.
The Trinitians pulled themselves together and
Wanigasekera initiated a break from mid field. Madduapatabendi linked
up and Senarath put the finishing touches by the corner flag. (29-3).
Another Wanigasekera break ended in prop Hassan
going over.
Referee: Pradeep Fernando.
