Brandix provides water to housing scheme in Galle
In keeping with the Brandix outreach initiative
’Water is Life’, to provide safe drinking water for
those most in need, Brandix – Sri Lanka’s single largest
exporter, in partnership with the Green Movement, Sri Lanka provided
an internal water supply system for the newly resettled Housing
Scheme at Atanakitha, Imaduwa G S Division in the Galle District.
This housing scheme provides shelter to 30 families
whose houses were destroyed by the tsunami. The housing scheme was
funded by Aid and Relief Japan (AAR- Japan). Brandix funded the
supplying of water to the households at a cost of over Rs. 2 million.
As implementing partner the Green Movement provided the necessary
skilled labour and provided supervision for the project. The houses
were ceremonially inaugurated recently by Minister of Disaster Management
and Human Rights, Mahinda Samarasinha.
In addition to the infrastructure support, Brandix
supports this community through capacity building initiatives. The
employees of Brandix Activewear, Koggala have volunteered to work
with these households and the adjacent school to give them basic
livelihood related tools that were lost in the tsunami while sharing
with them knowledge gathered at the work place. This includes; ‘5S’
principles, energy saving strategies, environmentally friendly community
development strategies and basic waste management skills, the company
said in a statement.
