Famous Structures

Many buildings and structures throughout the world have become famous landmarks. Today we cover some of these famous structures.

TAJ MAHAL

The white marble Taj Mahal, built 1632 - 1650 at Agra, India was a tomb for Shah Jahan's wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

THE PARTHENON

The Parthenon of Greece, built on the Acropolis in Athens, was the chief temple to the goddess Athena. It is believed to have been completed by 438 BC.

THE EIFFEL TOWER

The Eiffel Tower, in Paris, was built in 1889. It is 1,056 feet high, including the television tower.

THE PANTHEON

The Pantheon, at Rome was begun in 27 BC. It has served fro 20 centuries as a place of worship.

THE TOWER OF LONDON

The Tower of London, is a group of buildings covering 13 acres. The central White Tower was begun in 1978. It was once a royal residence.

THE VATICAN

The Vatican, is a group of buildings in Rome that includes the residence of the pope. The Basilica of St. Peter, the largest church in the Christian world, was begun in 1450.
Te Vatican is also an independent state, the smallest in the world.

The COLOSSEUM OF ROME

The Colosseum of Rome, the largest and most famous of the Roman amphitheatres was opened for use in AD 80.

The PALACE OF VERSAILLES

The Palace of Versailles in France was built during the reign of Louis X1V in the 17th century and served as the royal palace until 1793.

The GREAT WALL

The Great Wall of China (begun 228BC), designed as a defense against nomadic tribes, is so big and long that it can be seen from orbit!
