South Asian Games

Nothing could kill the spirit of the Games…not bad weather, not closed roads, not countless security checks. The '10th South Asian Games' (SAG) just had to come to pass at the Sugathadasa Stadium on Friday evening.

Mayumi Raheem (15 years) - swimming

The opening of the SAG was a kaleidoscope of colour! Swirls of yellow, pink, red, blue, green, orange, black and white intermingled together, created quite a breathtaking picture…

The Sri Lanka Army and Air Force parachuters displayed their prowess by landing swiftly in the middle of the stadium grounds, with the flags fixed firmly to their waists.

The age-old traditional game 'Pora Pol' which was played to invoke the blessings of the goddess of fertility Patthini, was enacted to boast the rich heritage of sport in our culture from days of old.

Chinthana Vithanage - weight lifting

The symbolic torch lighting ceremony officially declared open the SAG games. The torch was then carried around the stadium by past medallists and eventually lit jointly by national hurdler cum sprint queen, Sriyani Kulawansa and veteran athlete and coach, Nagalingam Ediriweerasingham.

The fireworks display was simply breathtaking! The SAG 2006 could be best described as being an absolutely delirious riot of joy, colour and life!
