Horu Samaga Heluwen at Tower Hall

The Colombo Chapter of the Alumni Association of the University of Peradeniya will stage Prasanna Vithanage’s popular drama ‘Horu Samaga Heluwen’ at the Tower Hall, Maradana today, August 27 at 3 p.m. and 6.30 p.m. The proceeds will be utilised for the welfare activities of the Alumni Association.

Blood donation campaign

The Leo Club of Colombo (Host) District 306 A1 has organised a blood donation campaign on September 16 at the National Blood Transfusion Service at Elvitigala Mawatha, Narahenpita. The public is requested to join in this project.

AGM of PMRP

The People’s Movement for the Rights of Patients (PMRP), which is working towards the vision of a health service where the well-being of the patients, and especially the poor, is given top priority, held its Annual General Meeting on August 19. The PMRP, whose work has been recognised by the World Health Organisation, has five goals for the coming year – the implementation of the National Medicinal Drugs Policy based on the Senaka Bibile principle, a National Health Policy, a National Food Policy, a comprehensive Patient’s Charter and a Constitutional Amendment to declare health as a fundamental right of the people.

The following were elected as officials of the PMRP for the coming year:

AGM of All Ceylon Pensioners’ Society

The 36th Annual General Meeting of the All Ceylon Pensioners’ Society was held recently.

Scholarships for medical students
The Sri Lanka – Canada Scholarship Foundation, which initiated the Wijayasena Kiriwattuduwa memorial scholarships in 2006 has selected 17 medical students for ‘The Parents’ memorial scholarship awards.

The students who are economically disadvantaged and succeeded in entering the Faculty of Medicine in 2006 were eligible to apply for these scholarships. Applications were called from first year students.

The selected students will receive Rs. 1000 per month for 12 months. The awarding ceremony, presided by Dr. Venerable Mirisse Dhammika, will be held in September at Siri Sudassanaramaya, Battaramulla.

BC Rocks 2006

BC Rocks 2006 – a spectacular dinner dance is being organised by the Past Pupils’ Association of Bishop’s College on September 2 at the Grand Ballroom of Water’s Edge, Battaramulla. The dance coincides with the 121st anniversary of Bishop’s College, which was founded in 1875.
Tickets are available at the Bishop’s College Auditorium.

Paper on bronze statue

A paper will be presented at the Royal Asiatic Society (Sri Lanka), on the topic “The Bronze statue at the British museum, is it Tara the Hindu – Tantric – Mahayana Goddess or Pattini the Buddhist Bodhisatva?”

The lecture by Srilal Perera, former Basnayake Nilame, Kadadora Pattini Devale will be at the Mahaweli Auditorium, No. 96, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 7 on August 28 at 5 p.m.
