Lady luck for the gallant Thomians

S. Thomas’power was at its best at Longden Place yesterday when they gained an easy 31 points (3 goals, 2 tries) to 16 (1 goal, 1 penalty, 1 drop goal) win over St. Joseph’s to retain the Lady Jayatilleke Shield.

Commenting on the game Thomian coach Asanga Seneviratne, said that overall he was pleased with the performance, adding: “There are some weaknesses, specially in the halves combination.”

Josephian coach S.W. Chang said that the Thomians played well. He however was looking forward to the game against Vidyartha in Kandy next week, where a tough game awaits them.

S. Thomas’ scored first when Sadeva Dharmadasa touched down and he himself added the extra points. They increased the lead a few minutes later when flanker Suki Samaranayake scored and Budhi Jayasundare added the extra points.

St. Joseph’s scored against the run of play next when Sanjay Fernando touched down. Dilshan Perera added the extra points. STC - 14, SJC - 7.

A Dilshan Perera penalty gave St. Joseph’s another three points. S.Thomas’ led 19-10 at the breather.

Sadeva Dharmadasa, Balachandra Thaneeshan, Roshitha Rajapaksa and Niranjan Bibile caught the eye with their tireless play for S. Thomas’. Tries in this half were scored by Roshitha Rajapaksa (2) and Thaneeshan (1). Dilshan Perera put over a penalty and a drop kick for the Joes.

S. Thomas’ made a clean sweep of the junior games (under 12, 14 and 16) winning them effortlessly.

Reverend Father Sylvester Ranasinghe , Rector St. Joseph’s presented the Lady Jayatilleke Shield to Balachandra Thaneeshan, who led the Thomians yesterday.
