More elderly Lankans by 2020, says Professor

During a ceremony to admit students for the Para-Medical
Degree programme of the University
of Peradeniya, University
Grants Commission Chairman Professor Gamini Samaranayake said
the country was witnessing a steady decline in the child population
and a marked increase in the adult population with a projected increase
in the over 60 years population by 2020.
Prof. Samaranayake added that the Peradeniya University
had taken the initiative to award Medical Degrees in allied Health
and Sciences as a vital step in diversifying courses to meet the
social and economic demands of Lanka.
He said the University had continuously strived
to ensure excellence in education and that it was this type of institutions
that could take the lead in higher education by providing the basis
for development programmes, policy formulation and training of middle
and higher level human resources.
Vice Chancellor Professor Kapila Gunasekera and
the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Dr. Chula Gunasekera also addressed
the participants.
