Bus kills Corporal at zebra crossing
Kandy Coroner and Attorney-at-Law M.G. Piyatilleke
said that reckless driving had cost a valuable life, which otherwise
could have been of use to the country. He added that causing the
death of an Amry Corporal at a pedestrian crossing needed enhanced
punishment and legislation should be amended to that effect.
The Coroner made these observations when he held
the inquest on the death of Corporal M.V. Kelum Sudharsana, who
was knocked down by a private bus at a pedestrian crossing opposite
the Pallekelle Camp.
The victim Corporal Sudharsana was admitted to
the Kandy Hosptial where he succumbed to his injuries.
Wife of the deceased, Nirosh Ranasinghe from Pilamatalawa
giving evidence said the deceased had been serving at Welikanda
and had come home on vacation. She said that he went to Pallekelle
Army Camp to report for duty. She said that they were parents of
a five-year-old girl and a two-year-old boy.
The bus driver was remanded.
Sub Inspector Madduma Bandara of Menikhinna Police
led evidence.
