Woman Sub Inspector (WSI) Ajantha Dissanayake,
had been trained at the Police Training School in Kalutara and later
had served for a short period in Colombo before taking up her present
post.
Explaining her unit’s involvement in crime
busting, she said the ancillary arm to police was the unit which
she heads. They possess equipment gifted by the Swedish Government
and were trained by Swedish police personnel, she said.
WSI Dissanayake said her unit was capable of tasks
such as the taking of finger prints, blood samples etc from the
crime scene for DNA testing if needed.
She said her team was better equipped now than
earlier, when as in the Umma Devi case at Nawalapitiya, the blood
samples were stored in bottles in courts, which resulted in problems
when DNA tests were needed.
“With this method, the process is more definite
and the samples are the responsibility of my unit,” she said.
Commenting on modern hi-tecch ways of solving
crime, she said they could make use of digital photographs stored
in computers for future use.
Sub Inspector Ajantha Dissanayake was selected
to head this special unit considering her 21 years dedicated service
as the criteria. And from what was seen, she knows her job.
In a yet male-dominated society, for a woman to
head a unit of this calibre is indeed a credit to females of the
country.
