CCC/UNDP project assists tsunami-affected jewellery
trade
The CCC/UNDP Viyaparika Diriya” project has
made arrangements for eight tsunami affected goldsmiths and silver
smiths to display their products at FACETS Sri Lanka – the
16th Sri Lanka International Gem & Jewellery exhibition to be
held from September 6 to 9 at the BMICH.
The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce has provided various
forms of assistance for tsunami affected micro entrepreneurs from
January 2005. Together with UNDP, CCC is now operating a project
for the sustainable recovery of micro entrepreneurs called–“Viyaparika
Diriya” in eight tsunami affected districts through the District
Chambers.
The main objective of this project is to facilitate
market linkages for micro entrepreneurs. Exhibition participation
has been facilitated keeping in line with the said objectives of
the project, the chamber said.
In the aftermath of the tsunami, the CCC and UNDP
have also been providing financial assistance and gradually realized
the need for market development as a long-term sustainable development
strategy.
To achieve this objective, the programme is in
the process of facilitating regional level and national level trade
exhibitions and providing various business management and technical
training for affected entrepreneurs.
