BASL works out laws against cyber crime
The Information Technology Committee of the Bar
Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) will hold a National Information
Technology Law Conference on September 8 and 9 at Trans Asia Hotel,
Colombo 2.
Speaking at a media conference held on August
30, BASL President Nihal Jayamanne PC, said that implementing laws
which will meet the IT needs is important at present.
“In some countries cyber crime police stations
are to be seen. Now Sri Lanka is experiencing a major growth in
IT therefore laws too needed to be implemented in this field”
he said.
BASL Secretary Sunil Abeyratne, who heads the
IT Committee said this conference will mainly focus on legal aspects
of e-commerce and e-banking.
“We can’t apply normal laws for online
contracts, computer/internet crimes and against computer hackers”
he said.
He further said that many are not aware of the
Computer Crime Act or Data Protection Act, which have a great impact
of the safety of signing contracts online.Presentations at the conference
will be made by specialists in different aspects of IT law. Individual
presentations will be followed by panel discussions. Panellists
include lawyers and IT professionals.
The conference will aim to look at the present
legal framework in connection with IT and communication-related
applications.
After the conclusion of the conference, the IT
Committee intends to submit a policy paper to the authorities on
the basis of issues raised and proposals made at the conference.
Mr. Javed Mansoor of the IT committee said the
ten sessions of the conference will include various risks associated
with the use of credit cards, issues on internet banking, decision
of the Supreme Court on the impositions of Customs duty on customized
software, legal issues related to business process outsourcing and
difficulties associated with forensic matters due to the use of
IT.
