Detention goes unexplained
A Tamil employee of the President’s Office
was on the way to Kandy with two of his friends, when they were
stopped at a police checkpoint at Weliveriya. The men produced their
National ID Cards as required, but not satisfied, the men were taken
to the Warakapola Police station. The President’s Office man
kept mum about his high connections while the policemen interrogated
them.
The detention period lasted several hours by which
time the policemen had come to realise that one of the men was someone
working closely with the Chief Executive of the country himself.
Finally, a call from a DIG resulted in their release. There was
no explanation as to why they were held without any reason for nearly
ten hours.
Push for snail mail
The postal service is to get a boost soon with
the addition of 1,507 new postmen to the service. The move is intended
to maintain an efficient postal service, according to Cabinet spokesman
and Media Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa.
The more the merrier!
Parliament approved 43 new pieces of legislation
last year. Of these, 14 were Finance Bills, ten were presented by
the Justice Ministry, mainly relating to prevention of crimes and
three by the Foreign Affairs Ministry to give effect to international
conventions.
More and more laws, and more and more people breaking
them as well.
