Play suspended
at US Open
NEW YORK, Sept 2, 2006 (AFP) -
Rain and gusting wind prevented any early play
on Saturday at the US Open.
The first week of action at the year's final Grand
Slam tournament has been badly hit by the weather with Tuesday's
play all-but washed out and a premature end being brought to Friday's
schedule as the remnants of Hurricane Ernesto crept up the eastern
seaboard.
That depression was still in evidence on Saturday
and the forecast for the rest of the day was for more rain and wind
leading organizers to suspend the start of play until at least 2:00
pm (1800 GMT).
Third seed Maria Sharapova was due first up on
the Arthur Ashe Stadium court against fellow Russian Elena Likhovtseva
followed later in the day by man of the moment Andre Agassi.
The American, playing in his farewell event, has
a third round tie against Benjamin Becker of Germany, but he has
been in agony with chronic back pain following his tough five sets
win over Marcos Baghdatis late Thursday.
