Emerald – first Sri Lankan shirt to get ISO 9001 – 2000

Sri Lanka’s very own Emerald shirt has achieved the unique distinction of becoming the first ever Sri Lankan shirt to obtain ISO 9001 – 2000 quality standards, the company said last week

Picture shows Director General of SLSI Mrs S.G. Weragoda handing over the ISO certificate to the Managing Director/CEO of Emerald A.F.F.Ikram, at a ceremony held at the Galle Face Hotel, recently. Executive Director of Emerald M.M.M. Ihsan (extreme left) and Deputy Director General of SLSI Dr. Lalith Senaweera (extreme right), are also in the picture.

This certificate was awarded by the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) which conducted audits on the processes ranging from the selection of suppliers of raw material to the distribution of goods to the market, covering the entire process including the human resource. SLSI also audited safety standards of employees and the hygienic conditions and facilities of the work place etc. From the marketing of Japanese-made shirts in Sri Lanka, in 1956, Emerald has recorded commendable achievements during the past 50 years in the domestic market.
