Bell connects 225,000 CDMA lines in record time
Lanka Bell, the first private fixed
telecom operator to launch CDMA technology in Sri Lanka,
sold its 225,000th CDMA line last week, 21 months ahead
of the three-year deadline stipulated by the Telecommunication
Regulatory Commission (TRC).
In a company statement, Managing Director
Suren Goonewardene said that Lanka Bell which rolled
out CDMA technology to Sri Lanka in May last year reached
the target in record time, surpassing all expectations
of both the TRC and the general public.
Kanchana Ratwatte, Director General
of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri
Lanka, complimenting Lanka Bell on this achievement
said the desired objective of the CDMA network was to
reach the vast majority of the Sri Lankan masses who
did not have connectivity. “In this endeavour
Lanka Bell has made significant progress in achieving
this milestone of 225,000 CDMA customers.”
Goonewardene said Lanka Bell’s
aggressive CDMA advertising campaign extended beyond
all boundaries of imagination and creativity, and went
on to be a hit with the general public. “The popular
‘Karadara-less Kurukuru-ess commercial has now
become a part of Sri Lanka’s colloquial parlance.”
