Central stun favourites
The Wesley U-16 10-a-side invitation
rugby tournament organized by the Rugby Development
Committee of Wesley in conjunction with the celebrations
of 50 years of rugby of Wesley College got underway
yesterday.
Fancied teams such as Isipathana,
Kingswood, St. Anthony’s, S. Thomas’, St.
Joseph’s, St Peter’s and Wesley qualified.
The biggest surprise was the performance of Piliyandala
Central in the cup category. The teams to qualify for
the plate were: Mahanama, Lalith Athulathmudali MMV,
S. Thomas Prep, Sabaragamuwa Combined, St Sylvester’s,
Dharmaraja, DSS and CWW Kannangara Colombo.
Asoka MV, Carey, St. Benedict’s,
Nalanda, Lumbini MV, Siri Piyaratne MMV Padukka, Royal
Panadura and Ananda were left to fight out in the Bowl
championship. Of the matches played yesterday Isipathana
and St Joseph’s recorded the highest scores in
the round robin stage when they chalked up the identical
score of 46-0 against Asoka MV and Siri Piyaratne MMV
respectively.
Today the quarter finals will be played
from 8.30 a.m. onwards and the semi finals are scheduled
for 1.00 p.m. with the cup final at 4.30 p.m. The cup
quarter final line up are: Isipathana vs Kingswood,
St. Anthony’s vs S. Thomas’, Piliyandala
Central vs St. Joseph’s and St Peter’s vs
