Mayor meets
ratepayers to smoothen progress
Kandy Mayor L.B. Aluvihare, at a discussion
with the Kandy Rate Payers’ Association, said
that representatives of the Association would be appointed
to three standing committees of the Council.
A delegation of rate payers met the
Mayor to discuss the needs of the city and the environmental
pollution.
Association Secretary Goonetilleke
Munasinghe told The Kandy Times that the meeting with
the Mayor was cordial and that he pointed out one ratepayer
out of the many in default of taxes, who owed the Council
Rs. 14 lakhs as water charges.
Mr. Munasinghe said that the Mayor
had given a patient hearing to most of the matters discussed
and that solutions would be forthcoming in the near
future. He also said that the ratepayers were free to
discuss matters that were of crucial importance to the
ratepayers and that the representative group, had made
it much easier to discuss these matters.
The Association also pointed out that
there was no coordination of the work undertaken by
the Municipal Council. To this the Mayor had said that
he should be informed and that immediate action would
be taken on such complaints.
Mayor Aluvihare had also promised
to meet the Association representatives once in two
months to monitor the Council’s work.
Among those present at the discussion
were Dr. G. Nelson, former MMC Anthony Sandanam, L.
Karaliyadde and R.M. Ratnayake.
