His first baptism in the big league
was under granite – hard No. 8 Haris Omar in 1999.
It was no looking back since then until he retired this
year.
Ansar hails from a rugby stock. His
father played for the Navy. His younger brother Amjar
at present plays for the CR and FC with a lot of success.
The Sunday Times met Ansar at the Denzil Kobbekaduwa
Pavilion watching the IRB international Satellite 7s
with his friends. Asked what made him retire when he
could still be in the ‘scrum’. When champs
Kandy SC went on the rampage to dominate the local scene.
Ansar was part of the team’s success.
Q: Apparently going
to settle down in New Zealand. The land of the Black
Caps.
A: Yes.
Q: Are you going to play?
A: No. but I’ve much to learn
whilst in the Kiwi land. Pertaining to the latent rugby
skills. Probably a coaching stint. To be a qualified
coach. To make it a career.
He thanked his numerous friends and
well-wishers, who helped him to get out of the dark
valley. Also his parents who sacrificed much for our
wellbeing (family).
