Kandy Lake
gets another silt outlet
By L.B.S
The Irrigation Department is to open
up a new silt trap on the Ampitiya end of the Kandy
Lake near Wewasiripura, closing a drain in middle of
this filled up land.
The silt accumulating at the Ratubokkuwa
trap, especially during rainy weather, would have an
additional exit after the new one is opened. But the
old drain would be completely closed.

The silt trap would be constructed
in the land above the Kandy Lake, which was filled up,
amidst public protests on a Kandy Municipal council
(KMC) resolution on a request from a Councillor to establish
a 'Mini Zoo'.
But the public protested claiming
that animal waste matter would flow into the Lake. The
zoo project was abandoned after the protests.
During a recent meeting chaired by
Governor Tikiri Kobbekadwua, Central Region Chief Irrigation
Engineer Mrs. Chandra Godaliyadde said that nearly 90
per cent of the work expected from the original Rs.
65 million was completed.
The dredging of the lake was completed
but for a few metres of Gambian walls to be constructed.
Around Rs. 8 million was yet to be released, Ms. Godaliyadde
added.
The Governor said he would urge them
to release the money and for the work to be completed.
He also suggested the planting of trees in the open
spaces be used as a playground to prevent vehicles being
parked.
