Yellow Pages
sues SLT
Yellow Pages and Sri Lanka Telecom
(SLT), who parted company in 2002, have come back together
– this time, however in court.
The Commercial High Court has fixed
trial for October 19 in a case where Directories Lanka
(Pvt) Ltd (DLPL), publishers of the Yellow Pages, is
suing SLT over an intellectual property dispute and
is claiming Rs 250 million in damages.
DLPL says SLT copied some of its advertising
material for a promotion in a highly distinctive manner
which looks similar to the products and services listed
in the Yellow Pages Directory.
It said SLT had used a similar design
in the cover page of its directory for the first time
and that was only after Yellow Pages had published its
advertisements containing a similar design.
SLT has denied all the charges saying,
among other things, that the Yellow Pages Directory
contains a layout different from the layout and contents
of the disputed covers of SLT’s telephone directories
for 2005/2006
Yellow Pages published the SLT directory
for many years but parted company with SLT in 2001 and
SLT then began publishing its own business directory
which in 2005/06 was called the Rainbow Pages.
Anil Tittawela with A. Rodrigo and
R Seneviratne instructed by FJ & G. de Saram represent
Yellow Pages while S.L. Gunasekera with A.W. Yusuf,
M.E. Wickramesinghe and Ms S. Gunasekera instructed
by Julius & Creasy appeared for SLT.
