Civilian Bravery Awards

Nine Sri Lankans and a Pakistani will be awarded
medals of bravery at the 13th annual National Civilian Bravery Awards
to be held tomorrow, October 30 at the main auditorium of the BMICH.
The chief guest at the ceremony will be Dr. Greg
French, High Commissioner for Australia in Sri Lanka and the guest
of honour, Lt. Colonel Colin Bannister, the Honorary Secretary of
the Royal Humane Society of Australia.
A police constable who saved a family of five
caught in heavy floods by taking each of them on his shoulders across
the waters surrounding their house; a police sergeant who saved
three fishermen facing death near Mahamodara Bridge in Galle and
a youth who saved a deputy principal who had fallen from a wooden
bridge into a river are some of those who will be honoured.
The Medal for Asia for Civilian Bravery goes to
a Pakistani engineer, who saved lives in the aftermath of the October
8, 2005 earthquake.
The panel of judges comprised Justice Ameer Ismail,
the Chairman of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery
and Corruption; Major General Nanda Mallawarachchi, the Chief of
Staff of the Sri Lankan Army and Rajan Asirwatham, Senior Partner
of KMPG Ford Rhodes Thornton & Co.
