Civilian Bravery Awards tomorrow

Nine Sri Lankans and a Pakistani will be awarded medals of bravery at the 13th annual National Civilian Bravery Awards to be held tomorrow, October 30 at the main auditorium of the BMICH.

The chief guest at the ceremony will be Dr. Greg French, High Commissioner for Australia in Sri Lanka and the guest of honour, Lt. Colonel Colin Bannister, the Honorary Secretary of the Royal Humane Society of Australia.

A police constable who saved a family of five caught in heavy floods by taking each of them on his shoulders across the waters surrounding their house; a police sergeant who saved three fishermen facing death near Mahamodara Bridge in Galle and a youth who saved a deputy principal who had fallen from a wooden bridge into a river are some of those who will be honoured.

The Medal for Asia for Civilian Bravery goes to a Pakistani engineer, who saved lives in the aftermath of the October 8, 2005 earthquake.

The panel of judges comprised Justice Ameer Ismail, the Chairman of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery and Corruption; Major General Nanda Mallawarachchi, the Chief of Staff of the Sri Lankan Army and Rajan Asirwatham, Senior Partner of KMPG Ford Rhodes Thornton & Co.
