Twelfth Night with a twist

The Kandy Players will present Shakespeare's Twelfth Night in a Sri Lankan context using the original Shakespeare text with some cuts and innovative alterations. The production directed by Prof Ashley Halpe and sponsored by the British Council goes on the boards in Colombo and Kandy this week.

Olivia is a walauwwéhamu, Orsino a decadent administrator, the twins castaways from India, Antonio a trawler captain, Feste a kavikaraya with a rabana, etc. The production uses a minimalist set and features original music composed by Bridget Halpé. The play will be performed in Kandy today, Sunday, October 29 and Monday, October 30 at the E.L. Senanayake Children's Library Hall at 7 p.m. Entrance programmes are available at the British Council Kandy and from Mrs. Bridget Halpe. The performances in Colombo are on Saturday, November 4 and Sunday, November 5 at the Punchi Theatre, Borella at 7.30 p.m. Entrance programmes are available at the British Council Colombo and Punchi Theatre.

The production is in honour of E.F.C.Ludowyk, the first Sri Lankan Professor of English and a major contributor to the life of drama in this country whose birth centenary fell on October 16. For more details please contact Mrs. Halpé on 081-2239113.
