Thanksgiving Holy Communion
Service
The annual thanksgiving Holy Communion Service
and sale of goodies- snacks, sweets, clothes, household items, books
etc will be held at the Dutch Reformed Church, Wolvendaal on Sunday,
November 5. The service is at 7.45 a.m. and the sale from 9.45 a.m.
onwards at the Wolvendaal parish hall, Wolvendaal Street, Colombo
13.
Sewing project for girls
The Community Centre of Sts. Mary and John, the
social service arm of Sts. Mary and John Church, Nugegoda conducts
a sewing project (SHAMAYO) for girls of low-income families and
school leavers, free of charge. The distribution of certificates,
exhibition and sale of the project will be held today from 9 a.m.
onwards at the church Community Centre, Nugegoda (Sarasavi Building).
All those who wish to earn an extra income, or want to learn sewing
are welcome to attend. There will be prizes and surprises for participants
too.
Retreat for couples
The Community of the Risen Lord will conduct a
Retreat for Couples, in English. The theme of this Year's retreat
is- "As for me and my family, we will serve the Lord together".
The retreat will be held on November 5, at St.
Peter's College Hall, Bambalapitiya from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the
celebration of the Holy Eucharist. Lunch will be provided and a
crèche will operate for children between 2-12 years. Couples
engaged to be married are also invited to attend.
New library for Ratmalana School for the Deaf
A new library for the School for the Deaf, Ratmalana
was opened at the school’s premises by Ranga Kariyaperuma,
President, DMS Recreation Club recently.
Mrs. Marie Wijeyaratne, Principal and Patron of
the Deaf School Past Pupils' Association, said that she was thankful
to the members of the DMS Recreation Club and the Deaf School Past
Pupils' Association for donating this valuable and useful equipment.
President, Deaf School Past Pupils' Association,
Shivantha Vivekanandan handed over many valuable books, a world
globe and a large map of the world to Mrs. Wijeyaratne. DMS staff,
teachers, students, well wishers and past pupils of the school were
present on the occasion.
Commonwealth Dental Conference to be held here
The 5th Triennial Meeting of the Commonwealth
Dental Association will be held in Colombo from December 1-3. This
International Dental Conference was awarded to Sri Lanka three years
ago at their last meeting held in Nairobi, Kenya.
This was stated by Dr. Hilary Cooray, Chairman
of the Organising Committee of the Sri Lanka Dental Association
and Vice President of the Commonwealth Dental Association. The main
agenda for this conference will be a scientific session, an oral
health exhibition, a dental trade exhibition, community screening
and oral health promotion programmes. The participants will be drawn
from the 51 member countries of the Commonwealth.
Art exhibition
'Moonlight Shadows II', an exhibition presented
by the Island Art Gallery and Saman Leema Designer Collections is
on today at the National Art Gallery. The exhibition features the
work of Anuradha Lakmalee Dias Bandaranayaka.
Visitors will also be able to view as well as
purchase some of the paintings and greeting cards made of artist
Saman Leema's collection.
"Bruno", a children's story written
by Udara Devindi, Saman Leema's young daughter was also launched
at the exhibition.
A tsunami souvenir greeting card made by Saman
Leema depicting the tsunami tragedy is also on sale and funds collected
will be used in aid of tsunami-affected children.
Nature photo exhibition
An island-wide student nature photo exhibition
organized by the Mihimandala Environmental Foundation will be held
on November 2 and 3 at Royal College, Colombo.
