Janashakthi Hockey Sevens 2006 at Matale

Janashakthi Insurance Company Ltd, will sponsor this year’s Hockey Sevens in Matale. Organised by the Old Vijayans for the 8th consecutive year, the championship will be held on 4th and 5th November at the Bernard Aluvihare Stadium and Nandimithra Ekanayake international stadium, Matale.

This year’s championship sees the participation of local teams representing all provinces together with overseas teams from India and Pakistan. As it has done in the past, this year’s championship is expected to be the centre of attraction among the sports loving public during this period.

The City of Matale, with its 65 year old history of hockey, has often been referred to as the ‘Cradle of Hockey’ due to the popularity the game enjoys there. Matale was even selected as the location for hockey matches of the recently concluded South Asia Games.

The two day tournament will have two main categories for men and women’s open, and a special category for over 40 men. The winners and runner-ups will receive cash prizes along with valuable trophies.

Last year, CH & FC grabbed the men’s title whilst Daviens ‘A’ won the women’s title. The Sri Lanka Army and Air Force have won the men’s trophy twice each on previous occasions. Seetha Devi Balika Vidyalaya has won the women’s title on five occasions, and remains the highest so far.
