Letter to the Sports Editor

May I please refer to the letter by Chula de Silva, General Manager, Royal Colombo Golf Club, published in your Newspaper on Sunday, November 12.

I do admit I was wrong in stating that Nirmal Hettiarachchi had conceded a walkover to Mithun Perera. Actually Hettiarachchi received a walkover from Maharoof and played Mithun Perera to be beaten badly.

On discovering the error I made, I attempted to minimise the damage in a telephone conversation with Hettiarachchi and apologised for the mistake.

The response was quite undignified. I followed this up with a letter of apology delivered to him by Express Post. There was no mischief intended in what I had written. It was a genuine error.

As a sports columnist and writer on Golf in particular, I do not claim to be all-knowing and beyond reproach. We all make mistakes. This is why I acknowledged the error.
