The Poppy is alien to us
This has reference to the letter appearing in The Sunday Times (November 19) by the General Ranjan Wijeratne Foundation, "A poppy is not just a flower”.
The poppy grows in Flanders, and a poppy is worn in remembrance of the soldiers who laid down their lives in World War I, including our soldiers who had to die there during the colonial days.
Sri Lankan soldiers of today who are fighting their own brothers in the same country have nothing to do with the poppy. They should identify a flower that grows in Sri Lanka and select a suitable day and date for remembrance.
