Be resolute about those resolutions

By Ishani Ranasinghe

Every year as the fire crackers light up the sky and we wish each other a happy new year, we all make a pact with ourselves to either do something better or to avoid doing a certain something.

This is what we call new year resolutions – we all make them. But do we keep to them? Not really. Sometimes it's just too hard or just not something that is important. So one month into the year, resolutions are forgotten and we are indulging in what ever we kept away from (after all we do have to make up for lost time don't we?)

So, we came up with a few resolutions that are quite popular, and, if kept, meaningful. And the list is…

Spend more time with your family…
While we are all out to meet up for coffee, lunch, and shopping with our friends, so many of us don't really spend time with their family. Hence, at the dawning of the New Year many of us almost always vow to appreciate our family more and to spend more time with them.

Quit smoking…
Many people at the dawn of the New Year resolve to quit smoking. While many wouldn't look at this as a practical thing, if you do achieve it, it definitely is a plus for leading a healthier life.
In the past you might have tried this and failed, but make the resolution anyway and try harder. I heard that an average smoker tries about four times before they quit for good. So it may be not this year, but you will quit eventually.

Quit drinking…
Going hand in hand with the bid to stop smoking is the bid to stop drinking. But then most people, especially the heavy drinkers are not really equipped to make such a drastic change. If you can't stop drinking altogether, make a resolution to moderate your drinking. So when you decide to stop drinking remember if you want to stick to it, first start by gradually reducing the intake of alcohol consumption. And then slowly you will be able to quit.

We all wish we enjoyed our life a bit more…
Living in a society where our days arehectic, stressful and basically no fun, we all resolve that in the coming year we would try to enjoy our life a bit more than the year before. This is a good resolution to make and keep to as you don't need an expert to tell you that enjoying life makes you a happier and healthier person.

Get organised…
Looking at all the reasonable resolutions you could make…getting more organised sure is the most reasonable.
Be it getting your room more organised, or even your office a bit more organised that you can actually find all your paperwork… being more organised helps you find things and makes you less stressed out. And that results in you being healthier and happier… besides it's not really a hard resolution to stick to, now is it?

As the New Year dawns, make a resolution that you can stick to and you can benefit from…even if you fail to stick to it past the first month, not to worry. Remember not many people stick to it past the first few months…and there is always next year. If you do manage to stick to it...you are to be praised. Whatever it is…hope all of you have a good year ahead and a Happy New Year to you!!!
