Independence in hills on grand scale

Elaborate arrangements have been made to mark the 59th Independence Day in Kandy today. The main celebration will be held at the Bogambara Grounds with Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa presiding.

A march past and drill display by 2,500 students from schools in an around Kandy and from members of the Cadet Corps, Police and Army will take place after the national flag is hoisted at the auspicious time of 8.47 am.

Governor Kobbekaduwa and the Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayaka will addressing the gathering while Acting District Secretary B.G. Sugathadasa will deliver the welcome address.

The independence message will be read out in all three languages by Shiranthi Hemamali (Sinhala) of Sri Rahula Maha Vidyala, Katugastota, Theressa Munzoor (Tamil) of Badhurdeen Maha Vidyalaya and by Nethmi Karunaratna (English) of Mahamaya Balika Vidyalaya, Kandy.

Earlier in the day, religious ceremonies will be conducted at the Sri Dalada Maligawa, St. Anthony’s Church in Katugastota, Selva Vinayagar Kovil at Katukele and the Meeramakkam Mosque in Kandy.

Students of 22 schools will take part in the events. Special traffic arrangements would be put in place to facilitate the independence day celebrations.
