Mayor wants traffic scheme revised

By L.B.Senaratne

Kandy Mayor L.B. Aluvihare has informed Deputy Inspector General Nimal Mediweke to check on vehicles speeding on Gopallawa Mawatha and Sirimavo Bandaranaike Mawatha, since he had been informed that there was high speeding since the introduction of the 'Trial' Traffic Scheme.

Traders and the public have been up in arms against the new traffic scheme implemented in Kandy. In addition the members of the Kandy Municipal Council at its last meeting held on Thursday vehemently protested against the scheme.

However, Mayor Aluvihare has sent a letter to DIG Nimal Mediweke informing him that certain decisions had been taken to alter the scheme.

The Mayor had ordered that from 7.00 pm onwards parking of vehicles be allowed on all streets.

Parking on Kotugodelle Veediya has been allowed other than the area around Hotel Casamara. Parking has also been allowed in the central area of Sir Bennett Veediya (former Colombo Street).

In addition the entire length of D.S. Senanayake Veediya and Yatinuwara Veediya will be allowed parking facilities from 10.00 am to 12 noon. The Mayor has copied the decisions to the Central Province Governor and the Chief Minister.
