Stay order on popular night club

An interim order restraining the tenants from using their premises as a karaoke and night club was issued by the Colombo District Court in a petition filed by the owners of the premises.

Dr. Gamini Illangakoone and his wife Deepthi Illangakoone who owned premises no. 195, Castle Street, Borella claimed the premises was rented out to the tenants to function as a restaurant and canteen named Checkers Restaurant.

The owners said later on the tenants started a karaoke and a night club named Checkers Night Club which functioned till the wee hours of the morning. The owners had complained to the tenants to stop the night club as it was creating a disturbance in the neighbourhood.

The Illangakoones said the tenants also started to employ young girls as hostesses to promote more business. The petitioners said when the tenants were asked to return the premises they had turned abusive and stopped paying their monthly rentals and whatever was paid was paid in instalments.
