Odds & Ends

Battle of the booze

The government’s fight to halt the spread of intoxicants in the country which runs under the banner “Mathata Thitha” (full stop to intoxicants) will see action being taken at a place that should serve as an example. On an apparent push from the JHU, the Inspector General is now expected to order the shutting down of police watering holes during working hours.

It is a well known fact that khaki coats have been freely quenching their thirst from these watering holes when they are supposed to be on duty.

So if the IGP cracks the whip police watering holes like the gazetted officers mess, the inspectors’ mess and the junior officers’ mess will only be open during after office hours. But some khaki coats are not ready to give up on a freedom enjoyed from the colonial days and are said to be getting ready to challenge it in courts.

Looking for missing piece

The accidental firing of the pistol belonging to TNA MP Chandrakanthan Chandra Nehru caused some panic at the MPs' entrance to Parliament on Thursday. The bullet had hit the floor and exploded, but fortunately no one was hurt. However, a piece of the spent bullet is still missing and police personnel are on the look out for it.
