CR romp home with ease

By Shon De Fry

Just another day in the office’ for CR and FC as they emerged victorious against Havelocks with a score line that read 28 points (1 Goal, 3 Tries & 2 Penalties) to 6 points ( 1 Penalty, 1 Drop goal) at Havelock Park yesterday. The deal was ‘signed, sealed and delivered’ by a very professional CR and FC outfit; and Havelock’s were left to wonder what went wrong and having fumbled eight times only with inches between them and the try line.

Early showers left the ground wet and slippery, thus at the beginning of the match both teams adopted a cautious play style. But Havelock suddenly took the game to the next gear with some impressive moves by their wing three quarter Niroshana Karunarathne which jolted CR, who looked like they were just out for a stroll. The woken up visitors in the fifth minute broke through the intent Havelock front line and drew first blood scoring a try through A. Dammika. Then with the home team struggling to collect the wet ball, CR went on to score another try and further consolidated their lead with two tries, all courtesy Zulki Hameed. At lemons CR and FC left the wet ground with 16 points to Havelock’s 3 points.

The second half was again approached by the CR players very gingerly, but the home boys had determination written all over them as they set out it seemed to make a point. Forcing the visitors to make errors, the Havelock boys managed to put three points more on the board with a drop goal by K. Jayasuriya.

However, with the introduction of Amjad Bukshs who always brings a little flick and a spring to the line, CR and FC simply out classed the Havelocks. First it was the big man Hasitha Perera (Khali) rolling over the home team for a try, and Bukshs waltzing his way over the line and converting it himself for a goal simply meant the end for Havelock. The home side have only themselves to blame, with many missed opportunities.

Yellow cards: S. Kumar and T. Henry (Both CR and FC)
