25 million displaced, 1,400 killed

Nearly 25 million people have been displaced by flooding and 1,400 killed in South Asia as the worst monsoon rains to hit the region in decades continued to wreak havoc today. Northern India, Bangladesh and Nepal are the worst hit countries, according to officials dealing with the crisis.In India alone, the number of dead topped 1,100 by late Friday, the United Nations' child welfare agency said in a statement.“According to government estimates, the cumulative number of human casualties stands at 1,103 in 138 affected districts,” said UNICEF.

 
Bush to tour collapsed bridge as divers search for bodies

President George W. Bush will today tour the highway bridge that crumbled into the Mississippi River as divers plunge back into murky waters in search of bodies. While the list of missing people continues to shrink, efforts to recover those trapped in the wreckage are moving slowly. Swimming almost blindly through the submerged wreckage of fractured roadbed, twisted bridge supports and mangled vehicles, divers faced fierce currents and chunks of floating concrete as they spotted several bodies underwater but were unable to retrieve any of them.

 
Arkansas couple welcomes 17th child
It's a girl - again - for the Duggars. Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar welcomed their 17th child, and seventh daughter, into the world Thursday. Jennifer Danielle was born at 10:01 a.m. at Saint Mary's Hospital in Rogers, Ark., the Duggars said in an interview. Jennifer weighed 8 pounds, 8 ounces and arrived five days after Michelle's due date.Less than 30 minutes after giving birth, the Duggars already were talking of having more.
