Government sidelines Karuna, promotes.....
In a significant shift of strategy and political alliances in the east, the Government is believed to have virtually dumped the Karuna faction and is supporting a new Tamil front for local elections in the east later this year, political sources said. The new front led by Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) leader V. Anandasangaree and including the People’s Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE) and the Eelam People’s Liberation Front (EPRLF – Pathmanabha Wing) is to begin its political activities in the east within the next few weeks.
 
MiG deal: All parties agree on select committee probe

The appointment of a Parliamentary Select Committee to investigate the controversial MiG 27 deal is to go ahead without a debate with all parties supporting the proposal to probe the issue. Chief Opposition Whip Joseph Michael Perera who moved a motion to appoint the Select Committee to probe the MiG 27 purchases told The Sunday Times that the government was in agreement to appoint the Select Committee without a debate and other parties too were supportive of the idea.

The former president of the AIDS Society for Asia and the Pacific (ASAP) has hit out strongly at Mahinda Rajapaksa’s early departure, following his address at the opening ceremony of the International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP), saying the President failed to listen to those in vulnerable communities.
