More taxes to raise billions
A new set of pre-budget taxes for a cash-strapped government will soon be enforced, increasing the cost of mobile phones, vehicles and other items such as washing machines. The new taxes are set to raise billions of rupees for the government, ahead of the budget.“The government is desperate for cash, so these are the various forms of ‘subtle’ taxes that come before the (November) budget,” one tax expert said.
 
US tells Govt. to protect Athas and family

The United States has asked Sri Lanka to take measures to ensure the safety of Iqbal Athas, The Sunday Times Consultant Editor/Defence Correspondent and his family. The US Government's position was spelt out in a written response on Friday to a query raised at the State Department news briefing on Wednesday by CNN's Zain Verjee to Tom Casey, acting Spokesman. Fresh offensive in Mannar: 9 killed

Nine civilians including two children were killed and five injured when their van was caught in a claymore mine explosion at an uncleared area in Mannar as the security forces launched a fresh offensive around this Silavathurai area last morning, the military said.

 

President to CWC: Sign MoU or go

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has asked the Ceylon Workers’ Congress to enter into a permanent political alliance with his ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party. The move, intended to prevent the CWC from switching allegiance during elections, was proposed to the CWC leader Arumugam Thondaman, during a meeting in Nuwara Eliya.
