Captain’s stunning recovery to take RCGC Title
The semi-finals saw two Parsees showing absolute brilliance. Billimoria gave much fancied Mithun Perera a painful caning with a defeat he will not want to remember. Billimoria went on the rampage and knocked off Perera’s challenge with a 3 & 2 victory. Rusi Captain walked all over Zen Dharmaratne giving him a lesson and stacks of experience.
David Evans was chocked of the title event by Mithun Perera 7 & 6 and Pferoze Billimoria kept Alain Gyi on the ground taming him 4 & 3. In the bottom half Rusi Captain regained form clipping Sheron Fernando 4 & 2.

The all Parsee final over two rounds was titanic even though the eventual score looked one sided. Pheroze Billimoria a champion a few times is now a veteran missing the dash he had a few years ago. Rusi Captain was loose and untidy in the first two stroke play rounds and as we all know he has the capacity to turn the table and call the shots. He played a magnificent game, unruffled and loaded with confidence he never pulled back his bold shots and was amply rewarded with a stunning win of 7 & 6. Billiamoria bowed off gracefully. Rusi Captain’s record is quite illuminating. Champion twelve times he comes behind Pin Fernando. Captain has an excellent chance of matching Pin’s record if only he can spend time from the massive business empire the young man is piling. Sohli the elated father and Sriyani are planning a lively party with an “Alfresco” dinner for friends, neighbours and well wishers.

Silver Division
Lal Wickrematunga was given a soft but painful knock by Nilkamal Perera defeated 5 & 4. Saliya Senanayake had a torrid time keeping Adrian Perera down. Eventually Adrian came through with a slender win 2 & 1. In the bottom half Harin Udeshi was consistently good with methodical and well calculated shots. He was quite tame where as normally he has a reputation of playing flashy and extravagant shots. He beat Richeal Hamid 2 & 1. In the other games Nihal Boralessa came with a well planned game to go ahead of Gong Feng 1 up.
In the semi-finals Nilkamal Perera got tough with Saliya Senanayake beating him 2 up and Harin Udeshi kept Nihal Boralessa under control and then moved into a comfortable 4 & 2 victory.
In the finals there was no stopping young Udeshi. Nilkamal Perera tried hard to cling on to Udeshi but the pressure was too great. As soon as he started slipping Udeshi saw the weak spot and pounced on him to take a praiseworthy victory 4 & 3 and the Silver Crown of 2007. I understand Udeshi had a slap up party.
Bronze Crown
Ajantha Mylvaganam a spirited player found himself in the deep end. D. Amerasinghe knocked him 6 & 5. The rising star and a good looking stroke player Saakya Ukwatte impressed considerably with a 3 & 2 win beating Chintaka Jayawardena 3 & 2.
In the bottom half Srimath Perera played a smartly calculated game to punish Suneth Wijesinghe 5 & 4 and that massive young man Gihan Wickremasinghe took Sunil Udalagama to the cleaners with a 6 & 5 victory.
Saakya Ukwatte beat D. Amerasinghe 1 up and Gihan Wickremasinghe beat Srimath Perera 7 & 6 to enter the Bronze Division finals.
Saakya Ukawatte was too impressive, calculating and courageous for Wickremasinghe. He picked a good looking victory and the Bronze Crown to massive roistering applause. A new star is born.
Masters
Surprisingly Doc. S.A.K. Abeywardena was too good for Doc. Priya Samarasinghe. Much was expected from Samarasinghe but Abeywardena pulled out the whip and Samarasinghe got a beating.
Swanky Boralessa also known as Kumar got his image tarnished by the elegance of Michael Sproule. Both great Thomians they celebrated for an elastic period in typical Thomian parippu style.
Doc S.A.K. Abeywardena a 60 year old rookie at the game went past stylist Michael Sproule with consummate ease to be crowned Masters Champion 2007. |
