A play on the plight of journalists

An insecure world, where injustice prevails. A time when media and citizens lack freedom of expression. Reporting the truth can have drastic consequences. No one will dare go against the underworld chief, backed by powerful people….or will they? Written and directed by Namel Weeramuni, the original play "Madyavediyakuge Asipatha" (The sword of a journalist) explores these issues, conveying a powerful message to society.

The play revolves around the plight of a journalist (played by Lalindra Dissanayake), who tries to stand up for freedom of expression but is thwarted by an underworld leader (Anil K. Wijesinghe), backed by a politician (Namel Weeramuni). The play lays great emphasis on the issue of truth and how the truth never reaches the public.

"The script is very powerful and original," says Weeramuni. Through strong language, dialogue, dance and song the play conveys a very relevant message. "There is so much torture, unease and injustice in today's world," Weeramuni notes, adding that "the journalist is symbolic of all the injustice faced by those seeking to report the truth.

Born out of a workshop production, the play features a cast of over 20 with music and choreography by Wasantha Kumara, Jayatissa Alahakoon and Somasiri Baddegama."Madyavediyakuge Asipatha" will be staged at the Punchi Theatre on October 2, 3, 5, and 6.
