‘Journey of Life’ at AF
French documentary 'Voyage en sol majeur' (Voyage in G Major) depicting a much awaited bittersweet journey of an elderly man will be screened on Tuesday October 25 at 3.00 pm and Wednesday October 26 at 6.30 pm at the Alliance Francaise, Barnes Place, Colombo-7. Directed by Georgi Lazarevski this 52 minutes documentary with English subtitles offers the message that one is never too old to embrace life's joys and challenges.
an accomplished French violinist now in his nineties, regrets not taking more risks-not trying to play solo, not taking that trip to Morocco he always dreamed of. He has been planning his trip for forty years. He has read all the guides, marked all the maps and taken a host of notes. Yet his wife adamantly refuses to go with him. Aimé is finally 93 years old when his grandson, director and photographer, decides to take him to Morocco. Whilst his wife, back at home, talks frankly about her life, the camera watches Aimé rediscover life, the world and others. He talks about his regrets, the missed opportunities and the lessons he has learnt in life. A bittersweet journey full of fleeting happiness, regrets and hopes for the future.
Just like life! Lazarevski also creates visually stunning images that linger just long enough on the contours of Aimé's face and the Moroccan landscapes to allow us to reflect on their meaning and beauty. Set to classical music, Voyage in G Major is about dreams, relationships, and desires. It reminds us of the often-difficult balance between love, loyalty and self-fulfillment. After his trip, Aimé's wife notes that "he used to be in a minor key, now he is in a major one," an observation that captures the essence of this beautiful film. Voyage en Sol Majeur received its world premiere at the 2007 Silverdocs Film Festival, a festival for documentary cinema sponsored in part by the American Film Institute.
