Cricket mess: Arjuna hits out

Sri Lanka’s World-Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga yesterday came out hard on the present state of cricket in the country, saying he may have to step in to undo the present mess. He said “It’s sad to see things deteriorating fast. I feel that if the cricket selectors cannot do their job in a proper manner and if there is unwelcome outside interference, they should resign and go home. In the first instance they were appointed to that place by the minister himself.”

This time it’s rugby chaos

Sports Minister Gamini Lokuge has this time summoned the Chairman of the Rugby Selection Committee Anton Benedict. This was in the wake of the axing of five players who went to France to watch the final of the Rugby World Cup.When contacted by The Sunday Times Minister Lokuge said he had met both parties namely the members of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) and the Selection Committee. He said he had asked both parties to submit their relevant reports to him

Rock the boat
This is another classic example of how we can bungle. Now the minister of Sport Gamini Lokuge has seen to it that even the big talking national selectors tow his line and imposed upon them to include the once deposed and then opted to stay out former national captain Marvan Atapattu in the final squad for the two Test tour of Australia next month.

England lets down blind cricketers
The National Cricket Association of the Blind has been led up a dark alley by the British High Commission in Sri Lanka. President of the Association J. H. R. Benedict and Treasurer M.R.B Perera are facing the possibility of not being able to attend the 12th Annual General Meeting of the World Blind Cricket Council scheduled to be held at Lords in London from October 26 to 29.
