Death for Kantale killer

The accused in the Kantale murder case was sentenced to death last week by Trincomalee High Court Judge Anton Balasingham. The charge against the accused Noor Mohamed Aswan had been proved beyond reasonable doubt.

The Attorney General had indicted the accused with the murder of Asardeen Kurkhan on February 19, 2001, using a pointed knife. According to Yakkan Munas a prosecution witness, whose evidence was led by State Counsel R. Kannan, he (the witness) had seen the victim fallen on the road with injuries.

The victim had told the witness that a person had stabbed him. Witness saw a person fleeing from the area with an object in his hands. He was later identified as the accused. Dr. Rohitha Silva who held the autopsy had said death was due to a three centimetre deep injury in the liver caused by a pointed weapon. Attorney A.W.A. Sattar appeared for the accused.
