A Poem for the Week

A visit to the farm

While walking through
the soft hay,
We see the kids leaping about,
And the grey donkeys
hee-haw and bray,
While the workers fish
for trout.

While walking in fields we hear the roar of the tractor,
While the hens and the ducks run in fear,
And the cows are examined by the doctor,
While the men in the house drink some beer.

In the evening the sun sets,
And at night you hear the owls hoot,
While the men play cards
and hold bets,
And the surroundings look black as soot.

My favourite food

My favourite food is rice. Our staple food is also rice. Rice is cultivated in paddy fields. There are lots of paddy fields in Sri Lanka.

Rice gives us energy. We can eat rice with curries and vegetable salads. I like to eat rice with fried sprats and coconut sambol. I eat rice every morning before I go to school. Aththamma makes aggala from left over rice.

Our teacher told us rice contains carbohydrates. There is red rice and white rice. I like to eat white rice. I think it is good to eat rice without eating bread in the
morning.
