Nabbed with 30 mg. of heroin

A 27 year-old-man was arrested for possessing 30 milligrams of heroin, Wattegama police said. Prasad Amunugama of Wattegama was arrested on this charge on information given by villagers. OIC Chinthaka Bandara said this is the first time that an offence of this nature was brought to light in Wattegama. He said an investigation would be necessary to see if more such offences take place in the area. He said the police have conducted a campaign among villagers and school children on the menace.

Trio caught with 1250 mg

Three men were arrested after 1250 milligrams of heroin were found in their possession, Daulagala police said. The men were produced in courts and remanded till March 11. This is the first time that such a haul of heroin was detected by police in this area.

Fined for having illicit fags

A trader in Daulagala was nabbed for having 96 cartons containing 19,200 illicit imported cigarettes in his shop for sale, police said. The tip-off was given by villagers. On being produced in courts the trader Abdul Faizal was fined Rs. 10,000 by the Daulugala magistrate.

Rape suspect netted

A suspect was taken into custody in the Hataraliyadda area on Wednesday and remanded after he had allegedly raped a girl, police said.

Meanwhile police said that three such cases had been reported in this village during a period of two months. Hataraliyadda police said they stepped up a campaign to educate school children and parents on the perils young girls face. OIC B P Hakmana of Hataraliyadda police is conducting investigations

Drug addict’s haul recovered

A man who robbed jewellery worth nearly Rs. 300,000 recently from one Somasunderam in Kiribathkumbura area was nabbed, Peradeniya police said. Based on information received the suspect Kasun Aravinda Surendra (24) who was addicted to drugs was taken into custody and all stolen articles recovered, they said. After being produced in courts the suspect was sent to Bogambara prison. OIC Narampanawa headed the investigations.
