Honouring Philip

By Madhushala Senaratne

The 1956 elections in Sri Lanka, a revolution which overthrew the small yet powerful elite, dramatically changed the social, political and economic landscape of the country. The Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) was a significant force and the late Philip Gunawardena was one of the most important protagonists of the revolution.

"Philip Gunawardena and The 1956 Revolution in Sri Lanka", launched on March 27, to coincide with the commemoration of his 36th death anniversary, looks back at the origins and impact of the 1956 elections in the country through the work of Philip Gunawardena, the architect of Sri Lanka's Socialist movement, State Councillor and Parliamentarian. The publication, edited with an introduction by Dr. Ananda Meegama consists of a collection of Parliamentary speeches of Philip Gunawardena made during 1947 - 48 and 1956 - 59.

The contributions of Philip Gunawardena towards the economic, social and political development of the country are many. His work was aimed at bringing relief to the villager. The speeches in the book cover his most important work, including the introduction of the Paddy Lands Bill, the Motor Transport Bill which spearheaded the nationalization of the bus service and the Tamil Language Special Provisions Bill.

Speaking at the book launch, Minister of Justice and Law Reforms, Amarasiri Dodangoda, recalling the days when they would eagerly gather to listen to the Philip - Robert speeches, said that Philip Gunewardena was a man with a clear vision. "From our younger days we loved to listen to his speeches. He spoke up against colonial rule. He was a nationalist who worked on behalf of the common man," the Minister said.

Dr. Ananda Meegama said that Philip Gunawardena was an able and extraordinary leaders. "He was jailed and disbarred from Parliament. Yet he was the only Minister who came fully prepared to Cabinet. The partnership established between Philip Gunewardena and S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike led to great things. They really changed the face of Sri Lanka. The oppressed were once again taken as the partners. May Day was established," he said.

"Philip Gunawardena and the 1956 Revolution", is published by Godage Publishers.
